Aerial photos show entire swaths of the nation’s coffee crop under water. Then, there’s the giant Guatemala City sinkhole. The Atlantic hurricane seasons opens today, preceded by the Pacific one just weeks earlier, but already seasonal weather – coupled with volcano eruptions and other freak accidents – has battered Central American nations. Volcano erupts‎ in Guatemala

Volcano erupts‎ in Guatemala


Volcanoes erupt in Ecuador, Guatemala. Guatemala’s capital was under a state of emergency and its airport closed Friday after the Pacaya volcano spewed black ash for miles in the southern part of the country.

Television reporter Anibal Archila who had been covering the eruption was found dead by colleagues after being caught in a blizzard of rocks and debris. Read more »

At least 20 people have been killed in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore as gunmen armed with grenades attacked two mosques of a minority sect during prayers.

Some worshippers are believed to have been held hostage while gunmen battled with police after seizing control of one mosque, officials and witnesses said.
