Doodle 4 Google. Your millions of online votes helped us pick the winners of this year’s Doodle 4 Google competition. Today, we’re pleased to announce the results.

Congratulations to Makenzie Melton, a third grader at El Dorado Springs R-2 Schools in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. Her winning design, entitled “Rainforest Habitat,” expressed her concern that “the rainforest is in danger and it is not fair to the plants and animals.” Makenzie’s design triumphed over more than 33,000 student submissions from all over the country. Makenzie’s colored-pencil creation beautifully embodied this year’s theme.

BP oil leak. BP began a last Hail Mary bid to plug the devastating oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico seabed Wednesday – with a giant glob of mud and trash.

The so-called “top kill” procedure involves shooting thousands of pounds of heavy mud and what the experts call “junk” – bits of old tire, used golf balls and pieces of rope – into the well to slow the oil flow.

Then cement would be used to cap the well.

“If it’s successful, and there’s no guarantees, it should greatly reduce or eliminate the flow of oil,” President Obama said.
