Volcano erupts in Guatemala
Volcanoes erupt in Ecuador, Guatemala. Guatemala’s capital was under a state of emergency and its airport closed Friday after the Pacaya volcano spewed black ash for miles in the southern part of the country.
Television reporter Anibal Archila who had been covering the eruption was found dead by colleagues after being caught in a blizzard of rocks and debris. Read more »

BP oil leak. BP began pumping mud into the Macondo well at 7pm BST yesterday – a procedure (slightly) more technically known as ‘top kill’.
This morning the oil company said things are going to plan with the latest attempt to stem the oil flow, or at least did not announce that anything is going wrong:
‘Top kill‘ operations continued over the night and are ongoing. There are no significant events to report at this time. BP will provide updates on progress as appropriate. Read more »

Toys ‘R’ Us Seeks $800 Million in Initial Offering by KKR, Bain. Toys “R” Us Inc., the retailer bought by buyout firms KKR & Co. and Bain Capital Partners LLC in 2005, said it plans to raise as much as $800 million in an initial public offering.
The largest U.S. toy store chain will use part of the proceeds to reduce debt, according to a filing today with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Wayne, New Jersey-based company didn’t disclose how many shares it would seek to sell. Read more »

Ireland’s Niamh Kavanagh won Eurovision in 1993. She is hoping the ballad “It’s for You” can do it for her again.
