Israel’s already strained relationship with Turkey may be another casualty of its navy’s raid on a Turkish-flagged aid ship headed for Gaza that left nine dead.

Public anger in Turkey spilled into the streets yesterday as thousands joined demonstrations after Turkish civilians were among those killed when Israeli naval commandos boarded one of the ships to stop it from reaching Gaza.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the raid “inhuman state terrorism,” Turkey recalled its ambassador and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu accused Israel of committing “murder” in remarks to the United Nations Security Council.

“There’s never been an incident which cut so much to the heart of this relationship and so clearly indicated the relationship has changed,” Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said in a telephone interview.
