BP oil leak. BP began a last Hail Mary bid to plug the devastating oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico seabed Wednesday – with a giant glob of mud and trash.
The so-called “top kill” procedure involves shooting thousands of pounds of heavy mud and what the experts call “junk” – bits of old tire, used golf balls and pieces of rope – into the well to slow the oil flow.
Then cement would be used to cap the well.
“If it’s successful, and there’s no guarantees, it should greatly reduce or eliminate the flow of oil,” President Obama said.
